SCAM NOTICE "Urgent legal services needed"
Be advised a scam email, titled "Urgent legal services needed", has recently been circulated throughout the Northwest Territories and across the country. It is a variation of prior scam attempts: A distressed woman residing in Asia requests your assistance in collecting a six- or seven-figure settlement from her husband. In some cases, she will claim she received your contact information from a Law Society (or Referral Service).
If you or your staff are unsure of the credibility of an email or phone call requesting services, please contact the Law Society.
Members are also reminded that the Law Society does not provide a mailing list to the public. While a members contact information is public knowledge, we do not provide such information in general list format. For more information on our privacy policies, please contact the Law Society office.

CBA-NT YOUNG LAWYERS Law Week Planning
The planning for Law Week (April 12th to 16th) has been coming along. It will be very similar to last year with a few tweaks. The Courthouse tour has been scheduled for the lunch hour on Wednesday, April 14th. Last year’s tour was very interesting and very well received, and no doubt this year’s will be just as informative.
The bake sale, with proceeds to go to the local food bank, is scheduled for April 10th. In addition, this year there will be an information booth at the same time/location with information on services available to the public to assist with legal issues.
The Sidedoor youth center, along with the schools, has been advised of a poster and essay contest. This year the Law Foundation of the Northwest Territories has offered to provide a cash prize to the winner of the best submitted essay. We are hopeful that with the involvement of the youth center we will see more involvement from students.
Volunteers are needed to bake goods, help at the bake sale and perhaps the info booth, and to review any submissions we get in the poster and essay contests. If anyone would like to participate or has any other ideas on how we can promote and celebrate Law Week, please don’t hesitate to contact Shirley Walsh at shirley.walsh@wscc.nt.ca.

Mental Health Issues and the Criminal Justice System
Wednesday, April 14, 2010 - 12:00pm Champagne Room (Yellowknife)
This event is brought to you by the CBA-NT Criminal Law Section. Registration: $25.00 (non-members) REGISTRATION DEADLINE: April 12
In criminal law, a "guilty" or "not guilty" plea or verdict is not always achievable. In the pursuit of a fair trial, it is often vital to assess the mental competency and abilities of the purpetrator and, in some cases, the victim.
Join the Hon. Judge Christine Gagnon of the Territorial Court as she discusses the essentials all criminal lawyers should know when considering the mental stability and well-being of all those involved. Judge Gagnon will address particularities that arise when dealing with an accused with potential mental illnesses, including assessments to determine fitness to stand trial or be held criminally responsible, and the associated ethical challenges for lawyers.
