CBA Law Week (April 13-17)

CBA's Law Day/Law Week events begin on Wednesday, April 15th , from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at City Hall. Presentations will be given by members of the Northwest Territories Bar on legal issues of interest to the public, as well as on topics related to access to justice.

The Courthouse opens its doors to the public at 12:00pm on Thursday, April 16th.  The tour will be led by a Court Administrator.  Two Sheriffs and a Court Reporter will also be available to answer questions.

On Saturday, April 18th, a bake sale will be held at the Centre Square Mall, with all proceeds going to the Yellowknife Food Bank.  Volunteers are needed to provide the baked goods to be sold, as well as to assist with the sale itself.  Baked goods would be needed by Friday April 17th to be organized for the sale.

Saturday evening, starting at 8:00pm, all members and guests are invited to the Elks Club for a casual night of karaoke and dancing.  Come out and help bring Law Week to a close.  There's a prize for the best performance, judged by a jury of your peers.

[CORRECTION FROM LAST WEEK'S BULLETIN:  Karaoke night is this Saturday, not this Friday.]

Throughout the week leading up to Law Week, as well as during Law Week itself, submissions will be accepted from local schools for a Poster and Essay Contest, with the topic being the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.  Volunteers are also needed to assist with choosing the winning poster and two winning essays (junior and senior divisions).

Contact Shirley Walsh (swalsh@davis.ca), Chair of the CBA's Young Lawyers, for more information or to get involved.

Lunch-n-Learn:
Nobody Likes Rejection, Including the Land Titles Office

Join us for lunch in the boardroom on Tuesday, April 28, when Thomas Hall, Registrar of Land Titles and Personal Property with the Department of Justice, gives tips on how to avoid having documents rejected.

Hall's presentation will dispel some commonly held myths regarding document examination, explain the role of the document examiners, identify the most common document preparation errors and how to avoid them, and explain what the Land Titles Office can do to help submitters.

Mark your calendars and RSVP by return now.

CLE:
Arbitration 101 - A Refresher

The Labour and Employment Section has invited John M. Moreau, Q.C., to give a seminar on arbitration and appearing before arbitrators.  Join us on Thursday, April 29, when Mr. Moreau will present pointers on:

and much more.

Mr. Moreau became a member of the Law Society of Alberta in 1975.  Between 1977 and 1998 he was a partner in the Calgary-based Moreau, Ogle & Hursh.  He then opened his own practice, which is now restricted to arbitration and mediation.  He has given presentations on arbitration and mediation for over 20 years.

This CLE will prove to be a must-attend event for any member dealing with arbitrations.  All members are encouraged to attend.  Please RSVP by return.
